An Act relating to schools; requiring students in the third
through fifth grades to receive instruction in cursive handwriting; providing
for competency in reading and legibly writing in cursive by specified time;
providing for codification; providing an effective date; and declaring an
emergency.

BE IT
ENACTED BY THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF
SECTION 1.
NEW LAW A new section of law
to be codified in the Oklahoma Statutes as Section 11-103.16 of Title 70,
unless there is created a duplication in numbering, reads as follows:
Beginning in the 2024-2025 school year, each school district and
charter school shall provide instruction in cursive handwriting for students in
the third through fifth grades. The
instruction shall be designed to enable students to demonstrate competency in
reading cursive and legibly writing in cursive by the end of fifth grade.
SECTION 2.
This act shall become effective July 1, 2024.
SECTION 3.
It being immediately necessary for the preservation of the public peace,
health or safety, an emergency is hereby declared to exist, by reason whereof
this act shall take effect and be in full force from and after its passage and
approval.
